In the heart of Seoul, amid the bustling city life, a beacon of hope shines brightly for over 600 North Korean refugees. Freedom Speakers International (FSI), a US-founded non-profit, is not just offering English lessons; it's providing a platform for these brave individuals to rise, share their stories, and advocate for the freedom they yearn for. With a commitment to providing tuition-free public speaking mentorship, FSI is breaking down barriers and giving voice to those who once felt voiceless.
The Journey of Transformation
Established in 2013 by Casey Lartigue Jr. and Eunkoo Lee, FSI initially focused on helping North Korean defectors improve their English skills. However, as the need for storytelling grew, so did FSI’s mission. Many refugees not only wanted to learn the language; they wanted to tell their dramatic tales of escape and survival from one of the world’s most repressive regimes. Lartigue noted that starting in the late 1990s, the tide turned, and thousands of North Koreans began to flee, allowing for a community of voices eager to share their experiences.
Why Public Speaking?
Tutoring has continued, but the core of FSI's work has evolved into public speaking courses, adapting to the needs of refugee students. The desire to raise awareness about North Korea, advocate for change, share personal stories, heal, and build confidence drives them. Lartigue explained that many refugees carry unimaginable pain and trauma due to their pasts, and speaking publicly can be a form of catharsis.
Stories of Resilience and Courage
One prominent example includes Songmi Han, who escaped North Korea in 2011. After years of adjustment, she published her story, "Greenlight to Freedom," in 2022. Reflecting on her experience, she remarked on the stark contrast between life in North Korea and the freedom she has experienced since escaping. Her story, like many others, serves to enlighten the world about conditions in North Korea, highlighting the resilience of those who have undergone treacherous journeys in search of safety.
Community Impact and Volunteer Efforts
FSI has been tremendously effective because of its dedicated volunteers, many of whom hail from the US. This cross-cultural collaboration not only enriches the teaching experience but also strengthens the bond between free citizens and those who have faced adversity. Lartigue commented that the shared value of freedom among participants from different backgrounds fosters a supportive and empowering environment; South Korean volunteers have joined in to support this important cause, showcasing a united front against oppression.

As FSI prepares for its next speech contest in February, it reflects on a decade of remarkable growth and impact.
